Tank Containers

There are 3 basic kinds of tank containers for transportation and storage of chemicals and non-hazardous liquids: beam, generic and swap tanks.

Tank containers - also referred to as ISO tanks, Intermodal tanks, or IM portable tanks, are designed for international transportation by road, rail and ship. They are a versatile means of shipping bulk liquids where a single mode of transport is not convenient.

Beam tank - a sturdy, all-purpose design at a reduced tare weight and has a low maintenance and repair record. Generic tank - Beam/frame hybrids. Capacities of 7,500 up to 27,000 litres.

Swap tank - wide range of design and specifications options, giving a versatile unit, capacities up to 35,000 litres.

There are many advantages to using tank containers for your shipping needs. For instance, one 20500 Ltr tank container can replace one hundred 205 Ltr drums, thereby reducing the handling, damage and spills associated with drums.

Tank containers are:

• Safe

• Durable

• Cost effective

• Offers secure door-to-door transport

• Can be easily stored loaded or empty

• Can be cleaned and placed into alternate commodity service with a minimum of down time

• Can last 20-30 years or more

Tank containers can be used to transport all types of non-hazardous and hazardous liquids, including:

• liquefied gases

• flammables

• corrosives

• toxics

• poison by inhalation substances

The tank is welded inside a frame, which protects the tank from damage during handling and serves as rollover protection in the event of an accident. The frame is built according to International Standards Organization (ISO) requirements. ISO standards specify the exact dimensions and tolerances. Normal capacities range from 17,500 litres to 27,000 litres within these restrictive ISO dimensions - 6,058mm x 2,438mm x 2,591mm (20’ x 8’ x 8’6”).

The ISO frame design must meet strict standards, including stacking, longitudinal and lateral inertia. Tank container’s frame has also been impact tested and meets the standards of the Association American Railroad (AAR 600) and Transport Canada (TC).

The tank design, which varies according to the commodity and customer’s specification, must also meet specified requirements. These standards are set forth by several national and international government agencies referred to as competent authorities.
